Dr Tony Farfus

Meet Tony, General and Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgeon.

Dr Tony Farfus is a general surgeon, specialising in the management of liver, gallbladder and pancreas surgery and liver transplantation. He is joining the team at Adelaide Colorectal and General Surgery, and is happy to see all general surgery referrals, as well as his subspecialty interests in the surgical management of diseases of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas.

Tony is dedicated to delivering high quality, evidence- based and patient focused surgical care. He is a compassionate, thorough, and meticulous surgeon. His warmth and interpersonal skills make him well liked by colleagues, patients, and staff. Tony’s primary focus is to ensure that every patient is supported and feels valued in each step of their treatment journey.

Tony completed his primary medical degree at the University of Adelaide in 2010. He has spent his early years as a doctor in South Australia, whilst completing a higher degree of Masters of Surgical Science in 2013. He then moved to the United Kingdom to work as an anatomy demonstrator at the University of Birmingham and became an associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2014. Following this, Tony returned to Australia and completed his general surgical training in South Australia and Hunter New England NSW to achieve fellowship in general surgery of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2019.

Compassionate. Thorough. Meticulous

He undertook two post fellowship years training in South Australia, focused on Upper Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic surgery at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He completed his further subspecialist training with the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association (AANZHPBA) in complex HPB surgery at Auckland City Hospital. He also completed an additional year of training in liver transplantation through the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit based in Auckland, prior to returning to service the patients of South Australia in 2024.

Tony is a specialist general surgeon with public placement with the Northern Adelaide Health Network at the Lyell McEwin, Modbury and Port Pirie Hospitals. He is credentialled as a liver transplant surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre and visits the regional centres of Port Augusta, Port Lincoln and Whyalla as a locum surgeon.

When not with his patients, Tony’s greatest joy comes from the time shared with his wife and two young children. He also enjoys discovering live music and is a passionate amateur footballer who represented New Zealand at the World Medical Football Championship in 2024.

Tony has a specific interest in the surgical management of cancers of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas, advanced liver disease and liver transplantation. He is also passionate about delivering expert and empathetic surgical care of a broad range of general surgical problems including abdominal wall hernia, proctology, minimally invasive abdominal surgery and surgical endoscopy.

Tony is excited at the opportunity to join the practice of Adelaide Colorectal and General Surgery.
